From the Principal

We know many parents had to have difficult conversations with their children and want to let you know about resources available in the district.

Every day we work hard to educate and keep your children safe. We are deeply saddened to hear about another senseless tragedy in our neighboring community. Please reach out to us if you have school safety or other concerns.

Aurora Public Schools Community:

We are all deeply saddened to hear about a shooting that has affected a neighboring school in Douglas County. It is always difficult to hear about these incidents, especially when they occur so close to home. Our hearts go out to the Douglas County community and I know that school districts in the metro area will join us in rallying around our neighbors.

I want to assure you that the safety of our students and staff is our top priority. As a precaution this afternoon, there were additional APS security and Aurora Police officers at our schools and in the surrounding neighborhoods.

We know that news of this nature can be disturbing for our students, families and staff. Our district mental health counselors are available to support those in need. We also want to provide you with an online resource from the National Association of School Psychologists that may be helpful as you talk to children at home and at school.
As always, we encourage students to report any safety concerns to a trusted adult or anonymously through Safe-2-Tell. Reports may be submitted online or by phone at 1-877-542-7233. By working together, we can all help keep our community safe.

As a reminder, we use a comprehensive approach when it comes to health and safety called APS CARES: Communication, Awareness, Relationships, Engagement and Security. APS staff members work hard to keep our schools safe every day and we continually review our safety plans. We have strong partnerships with law enforcement, fire and rescue agencies, as well as with mental health, crisis and social service organizations.

Thank you for your continued support. Please keep the Douglas County community in your thoughts and prayers.

Sincerely,

Superintendent Rico Munn
